Growth requirements (including habitat) : 

It requires partial shade to full sun and tolerates sandy to muddy soil.

 

Habit (Herb/ Shrub/ Treelet/ Tree)

It is a shrub or small tree up to 8 m tall.  Its alternate, stalked leaves have fleshy or leathery leaf blades that are elliptic and 5-16 by 2.5-7 cm. The new leaves are reddish in colour. Its flowers grow in stalked clusters from the leaf angles along the twigs. The flowers have drooping waxy, pink flower buds and are about 15 mm wide.  Its 10 mm wide fruits are round berries that are flattened at the tip, ripening from reddish-purple to black and contain a single seed.

 

Uses

The young shoots are eaten. A decoction of its leaves or roots is used to treat heart pains.

 

Interesting Information

It is the food plant for caterpillars of the butterflies Abisara saturate and other moths. Tiger ants may nest in its leaves.
