Lepironia articulata

Lepironia Articulata

Common Name: Blue Rush

Growth Requirements (including habitat): It requires full sun and lots of water.

Habit (Herb/Shrub/Treelet/Tree): It is an emergent aquatic plant which grows in dense clumps. It has a large, securely anchored root system. Its thin, blue-green stems taper to a point at the tip. Each stem has a pine cone-like inflorescence 2-3 cm below the stem tip.

Uses: It is used for phytoremediation, which is the direct use of direct green plants and their microorganisms to stabilise or reduce contamination in, in this case, water and ground.

L.articulata1

Interesting Information: The roots trap sediments in the water and absorb lead which accumulates in the plant tissues.
